What is a ‘cooperative’?
A cooperative is a “jointly-owned and democratically controlled” entity. Just like an organization can be a non-profit or a corporation - an organization can be a cooperative. In our case, our members vote for the Board of Directors and receive a share of profits. Examples of cooperatives include REI, the Park Slope Food Co-op, Land O’ Lakes, and credit unions. Shared ownership creates a more inclusive economy. The values of a cooperative are:
Democracy
Self-help
Self-responsibility
Equity
Equality
Solidarity
